Stereotactic focused ultrasound system

The RK-50 is a preclinical benchtop FUS system capable of delivering precise ultrasound exposures in the rodent brain. The system is used by researchers worldwide to study applications including blood-brain barrier disruption, neuromodulation, and sonodynamic therapy.

Targeting is achieved using a digital brain atlas and stereotactic methods, or with non-invasive imaging using a custom attachment.

The RK-50 uses real-time acoustic feedback with a built-in hydrophone to ensure rigorous and repeatable studies.

Key Features

  • Turnkey system: The RK-50 includes everything needed to start ultrasound brain studies out of the box.
  • Efficient workflow: The RK-50 was designed with the brain scientist in mind. The workflow integrates seamlessly into existing stereotactic protocols for brain targeting and delivery.
  • Intuitive interface: The software interface is intuitive and powerful, without requiring ultrasound expertise. Full control over ultrasound parameters is available, enabling a wide range of studies.
  • Acoustic feedback: Real-time acoustic emissions monitoring provides visual feedback on the success of ultrasound experiments, allowing elimination of failed treatment groups.
  • Flexible targeting: The RK-50 is capable of single spot, regional or whole brain targeting to facilitate a wide range of studies.
  • Portable: The RK-50 can be installed on a lab bench or cart, making it convenient to move the system to and from animal housing.
  • Training & support: FUS Instruments offers onsite installation and training with every system, and continues to provide technical and scientific support throughout the warranty period.
  • Cost-effective: The RK-50 is half the cost of building a system in-house, and comes with a warranty to ensure continuous operation.

In-House Custom-Built Calibrated Transducers (TX-50)

When your research demands a unique approach, our engineering team is ready to build it.
All transducers manufactured by FUS Instruments undergo rigorous calibration and testing. Transducers are leak tested and impedance matched. They then undergo calibration at the focus in water with a calibrated needle hydrophone to measure the spatial dimensions of the pressure focus, and also to calibrate the voltage to pressure relationship. Radiation force measurements are obtained for each transducer to quantify the transducer efficiency.

  • Anodized Aluminium, ø38mm, height 50 mm

  • Waterproof up to 0.5 m

  • Easy-to-mount, magnetic south pole facing end cap

  • Side exiting 0.3 m × 50 Ohm coaxial cables

  • Transducer cable with SMA Male Plug

  • Hydrophone cable with BNC Male Plug

  • RF Connectors are not submersible

Centrally located hydrophones enable passive cavitation detection.

An RF impedance matching network to 50 Ohm is supplied with each transducer and tuned to the fundamental resonant frequency. An optional third harmonic RF impedance matching network allows operation around three (3) times the fundamental frequency. The matching networks include BNC and SMA connectors in an aluminum, RF shielded enclosure.

Ultrasound applications of the TX-50 transducer series include, but are not limited to, increasing the permeability of the blood-brain barrier, neuromodulation, sonodynamic therapy, and thermal ablation. Spherically focused TX-50 transducers have an f-number of 0.7 and 035 mm aperture.
